Lighting Operators/Designers Create the Mood on the Stage
The lighting operator is responsible to the stage manager and lighting designer.
In amateur theatre, many times the lighting operator is also the designer, in conjunction with the director of the show. Skills are learned 'on the job' by volunteering with a group in a lot of cases.
Duties include: Attends load-in (if lighting is rented or not already in theatre, thus 'loading in'), lighting hang, lighting focus, level set, dress rehearsals, etc.
• Hangs lights, focus lights, follows all lighting cues as called by the stage manager, ensures lighting equipment is operational prior to each performance
Skills: • Understanding of lighting equipment (lamps, lighting boards, dimmers, wiring, etc.)
Attentive and follows instructions, with strong communication skills
